Q: What Led You to Start Using Cloth Diapers?
A:
I started exploring cloth
diapers when my third child, Keagan, had persistent diaper rash
problems that frequent visits to the pharmacy and pediatrician fail
to cure completely. That was when I started surfing the net and
learned that cloth diapered babies get less diaper rashes. I was
initially resistant to cloth diapering him because I still had vivid
memories of trying to cloth diaper my first born a few years ago
using the traditional square mueslin napkin and pins and having a
hard time pinning the nappy. It was not until I tried the modern
cloth diaper that I convinced myself that cloth diapering Keagan was
really feasible. We now have an 11 month old baby girl and I’m very
pleased to say that she’s 100% cloth diapered.
Q: How did you go about making cloth diapers your business?
A: Once I knew that cloth diapers
really work, I was very excited to let other moms know about it. I
mean, what’s not to like about cloth diapering ? It saves you money
and it’s good for the environment.
Q: Was starting your business difficult?
A: The beginning was always difficult
because Bumwear was still unknown. We have come along way in 4
years. A lot of our growth came from word of mouth recommendations.
Moms who use and like our cloth diapers recommend them to their
friends who in turn recommend them to their friends. And the best
thing is that a lot of our customers have become good friends.
Q: How do you manage to run a business with small
children?
A: It’s slightly easier now that the
older two are in school for half the day. I have a very
understanding mother-in-law who baby sits my kids anytime when I
have to run errands. I mostly do my work after the kids go to sleep
after 9-10pm. Balancing family and work is not the easiest things —
I’m sure all moms can attest to this.
Q: What does your home office look like?
A: A little messier than I really
like I to be :-) I have a big dining table that I never seem to be
able to keep clear for long. It serves as my work bench as well as
the kids’ homework table. So at any one time, you can see my fabric
swatches, work-in progress as well as my kids’ homework on it.
There’s also a trusty iMac that serves as my work computer and the
kids’ play computer.
Q: What Is The Most Rewarding Thing About Running Your Home
Business?
A:
I love being able to stay home with my 4 kids. I also interacting
with my customers. I am in a group called E-Biz Moms (http://www.ebizmoms.net)
made up of 5 of us WAHMs. I really love the camaraderie and the
support I get from this group.
Q: What new an exciting things can we
expect in the future?
A: More fun cloth diaper designs. I have
lots of fun myself coming up with those.
